Albanian Government Introduces a new Tax for daily rental apartments

The Albanian government is implementing a new tax for daily rental apartments, aiming to boost revenue and formalize the tourism sector. Initially, this tax will be set at 20 euros annually per bed in these rental units, with plans to increase it to 50 euros per bed in future phases.

This flat tax will help monitor and legitimize income from daily rental apartments, much of which currently goes undeclared. To ensure compliance and reduce informality, a dedicated task force will oversee these rentals.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, over 18,200 short-term rental units were identified in 2023 on platforms like Booking and Airbnb, amounting to around 176,000 beds. This new tax is projected to generate 14.4 million euros by 2030.

Revenue from hotel bed taxes is also expected to grow, reaching an estimated 70.5 million euros by 2030, up from the current 22 million euros. Altogether, these fiscal measures and the formalization of tourism are forecasted to contribute up to 85 million euros annually to the state budget.

Additionally, the Ministry of Tourism is developing a real-time registration platform for tourists and overnight stays, as part of a new strategy aimed at raising tourism revenue to 6.6 billion euros by 2030.
